still nothing
I thought we'd found a house, but I can't afford the 3-months plus deposit to get in, so here we are still at the hotel: eating ramen noodles and cold cereal, washing our clothes in the bathtub and dying for some alone time. I put a time limit of one month on finding a job and a house and we're getting perilously close to the end of the month. Just over a week and if there's no house in sight, we've got to pack up and head home. I'm not ready for that, but I'm certainly not willing to live long term here either.
Everyone tells me I can find a place for $300 or $350, but no one seems to know where these places are, only that they exist. I can't find any either, despite trudging around Ha Noi staring at message boards and scouring the Vietnam News and the New Hanoian.
I did get asked to take on the two classes that I taught last Sunday and I jumped at the chance. So, it looks like I'm a real English teacher. For a week or two, at least.

Maybe you've seen this already, but Craigslist has a site for Vietnam! http://vietnam.craigslist.org
(Looking thru some of the housing ads it appears you may have already posted in there? "Professional American with two children..."??)-Stephanie
I saw this and thought of you...http://vietnam.craigslist.org/wri/276214345.html
hey -t,
I know the following is of no practical help to you, but:
it's not for me to say whether things will or will not work out; if on the rare chance that they don't, know that I appreciate you giving my home and my people a chance. Based on what I have read, we haven't disappointed you.
Take care,
HmL
Nope, not disappointed with the country or the people. Slightly disappointed with myself, but more just frustrated. Even if we have to leave, I will eventually come back. Toi yeu Viet Nam.
Try calling the brokers in the back of the Time Out magazine. I think they can find places for $350, but they will likely also insist on 3 months upfront.
As for signing a long term lease, I'm not advising you to break it, but I'm just noting that the landlord will have a difficult time enforcing the lease once you leave the city (or even change your SIM number), much less leaving the country. Perhaps this explains the long prepayment requirements.
Continued good luck, and sorry about that bear of a job falling through.
you can get apaartments in hanoi for around 150 us a mth,u just gotta look, they basic one bedroom with kitchen and bathroom, just gio to look
I feel really sorry for your situation. Try to make friend with the locals and ask them for help. Most Vietnamese will do everything they can to help their friend in needs. You may get better deal with a help from a local than from fellow expats.
